A new visage sculpture, part of the 'Human Architecture Series', entitled "Temple Sunrise" was undertaken during September and October 2001 and is shown here in stages through to near-completion. This work pursues the theme of transition between realms of consciousness, in this case seeking to capture the moment of waking as right brain functions begin to emerge from the associations and images of dream sleep. The piece depicts a human face at the verge of waking, set upon a neo-classical open temple structure with echoes of Graeco-Roman architecture. The face is carved from English Lime inset with radiating bands of Silver Ash which emanate from the right temple. The floor of the structure below is composed of alternating squares of lime and ash which follow tiered octagonal stairs. The pillared 'temple' structure is made from Sassafras. |
